Hey you! Yes, you. The person reading this. So why are you waiting? So you think that you have time. Do you really?!
Take a moment to think about how much time you have. How often have you planned out a day only to barely get everything done or didn’t get anything done? Through the years there has been many days when I didn’t get done everything or I have put off to another day what should have been done then -just so I could have a bit of downtime. I am going to tell you to go for it. Don’t wait until the last moment or until it is already too late to do it. If it means something, do it.
I realize that you feel the need to be great. To show the world that you are a force to reckoned with…But, before you run off to be Einstein or Ghandi or President, take an inventory of your gifts.
I would like to ask you to follow your dreams but realize that not all of us are meant to be the President or really wealthy. Sometimes like in the parable above we need to realize that each of us has a different set of talents. We need to accept ourselves where we are and move forward from there. Maybe your talents don’t take you down the road you would like to go. Just maybe your greatness is a little different from your dream.
Take stock of the talents you are given. Maybe you just might be a pianist in a band or a church, not in a concert hall. Or just maybe that high rise apartment isn’t supposed to be for you, but the little house in a community is better. Or maybe you are supposed to spend time with your family or the poor in your community and not touring Australia meeting giants of industry.
As you are making your way along this road, listen intensely to the quiet voice you hear and do everything as a prayer. It is here that you will see God, and what is important.
No matter how small or few you feel your talents are, take the time to complete each task with greatness. I spent my most of my life chasing after that allusive greatness, only to fine it is right here. I wanted to be GREAT. But, I was meant to do little things with great love.
I have learned that we should be happy where God puts us and not covet things of others whether it is someone’s skills, talents, money, or family. They were meant to have that. We are meant to have something much greater but it comes from within. We are breaking one of the commandments when we chase after what we think God wants for us by looking at others or the world.
So why not for today why don’t you spend more time with your parents, your siblings, and your family. Begin there. Time passes away, and we only have now to do small things great.
Prayer: Catherine of Siena
O eternal God. You are as deep a mystery as the sea, in whom the more I seek, the more I find; and the more I find, the more I seek. For even immersed in the depths of you, my soul is never satisfied, always famished and hungering for you, wishing and desiring to see you.
